Der Snowboardcross-Wettbewerb der Olympischen Winterspiele in Pyeongchang ist von einer schweren Verletzung des Österreichers Markus Schairer überschattet worden.
Der Weltmeister von 2009 zog sich bei einem Sturz in seinem Viertelfinale einen Bruch des Halswirbels zu, wie das Österreichische Olympische Komitee mitteilte. Neurologische Beeinträchtigungen und Folgeschäden können jedoch nach derzeitigem Stand ausgeschlossen werden.
Im vorletzten Sprung war Schairer auf dem Kurs im Phoenix Snow Park zu Fall gekommen, er hatte die Fahrt aber noch beendet. Untersuchungen ergaben neben dem Halswirbelbruch auch eine Ellbogenverletzung. Der Snowboarder soll möglichst bald in die Heimat zurückreisen.
Nach dem Wettkampf mit zahlreichen Stürzen hatte es Kritik an der Strecke gegeben. Deutsche Snowboarder bezeichneten den Kurs als gefährlich. „Ich habe ein Problem damit, mit jedem Sprung mein Genick zu riskieren“, sagte Konstantin Schad. „Das ist nicht mein Verständnis von Boardercross.“ Paul Berg, der im Viertelfinale ebenfalls gestürzt war, sagte, dass es schwer gewesen sei, die Kontrolle zu halten: „Es ist für die Leute extrem spektakulär, für uns Sportler ist es manchmal nicht so glücklich“.
