Biathlet Simon Schempp hat bei den Olympischen Winterspielen in Pyeongchang die Silbermedaille im Massenstart gewonnen. Der Weltmeister musste sich nach 15 Kilometern im Fotofinish dem französischen Verfolgungs-Olympiasieger Martin Fourcade geschlagen geben, der im Ziel eine Fußspitze Vorsprung hatte. Bronze ging an Sotschi-Sieger Emil Hegle Svendsen aus Norwegen. Für Fourcade war es der insgesamt vierte Olympiasieg.
Erik Lesser verpasste seine zweite olympische Einzelmedaille knapp. Der 29-Jährige fuhr 0,4 Sekunden nach Svendsen ins Ziel. Benedikt Doll, dem nur ein Schießfehler unterlief, wurde Fünfter. Sprint-Olympiasieger Arnd Peiffer (+1:00,2 Minuten) landete nach vier Fehlschüssen auf Platz 13.
Für Schempp war es trotz der Niederlage im Zielsprint ein besonderer Erfolg: Nach Staffel-Silber vor vier Jahren in Sotschi war es seine erste Einzelmedaille bei Olympia. Der vierfache Weltmeister hat mit Doll, Lesser und Peiffer gute Aussichten auf eine weitere Medaille in der Staffel am Mittwoch (12.30 Uhr, Liveticker SPIEGEL ONLINE).
Insgesamt war es die sechste Medaille für deutsche Biathleten in Südkorea. Laura Dahlmeier sicherte sich zweimal Gold und einmal Bronze, Peiffer holte Gold im Sprint und Doll gewann überraschend Bronze in der Verfolgung.
